I went out this morning to the neighborhood adjacent to mine, Las Jardines, to run around the park there. I was pretty nervous - still adjusting to what is and what isn't safe - but I had absolutely nothing to worry about. There were a lot of (mostly women with iPods) walking around the small, L-shaped park. The only reaction I got was "why is this gringa so red and sweaty" looks. I definitely need to adjust to running in this heat! Even a cat sitting on a wall stared shocked at my hot pink face for a good minute. Other things I saw: a lot of super cute stray dogs (resisted the urge to take them home), some lizards, a chicken.
It was great to get some exploring in. The houses around here are beautiful. They tend to be colorful one-story buildings surrounded by ornate fences. Yards are immaculately landscaped. The people here are absolutely meticulous when it comes to home cleanliness. Everyone is constantly sweeping their patios and sidewalks. You can always find Rafael, the super at Apartamentos GILSA, by yelling his name down into the parking lot, where he is invariably sweeping up the dirt and debris that have accumulated overnight. I feel like I need to catch up and mop my balcony... (you would think that it wouldn't matter because it's outside, but when I went over to my neighbor Doris's yesterday, hers was so clean you could probably do surgery on the tiles...)
The sun is finally out after two muggy, grey days. What a difference it makes! With all the windows open and an amazing breeze coursing through the apartment, things seem pretty homey.
I am having technical issues with the camera, but expect pictures soon....
